As planned, MEA and union representatives met today with the mediator.
Essentially the discussions focused on ending the lock-out and on agreeing on a back to work protocol.
After close to 10 hours of discussions, the parties reached an agreement to reopen the Port of Montreal as of 8:00 am Saturday, July 24th.
Therefore the MEA and the union agreed to end respective pressure tactics and return to the negotiation table for a period ending mid-October.
This agreement is subject to the approval by the union members at a meeting scheduled for 10:00 am Friday, July 23rd. |

The Maritime Employers Association regrets the situation that is currently paralyzing Port of Montreal operations, but wishes to mention that it had no other choice but to declare a lock-out due to the pressure tactics carried out by longshoremen.
Like all organizations that rely upon the Port of Montreal, the MEA wishes for the lock-out to get lifted and for negotiations to resume quickly. However, these negotiations will only begin again if no pressure tactics are carried out within the Port by longshoremen for a period of time that is sufficiently long that activities at the Port of Montreal can stabilize.
As is expected, the Maritime Employers Association will be present at a meeting to be held tomorrow, July 22nd, in the presence of the mediator. |
